THE COMPANY
Modelwise enables the future of electronics design by making agile, safety-based development cycles possible with automation. Its software, Paitron, transforms outdated, manual FME(D)A into an up to 100% faster process whilst improving its accuracy – removing the need to compromise between speed and safety and empowering teams to identify and address critical design flaws early. Modelwise has a footprint in the U.S., Germany, the UK and Bulgaria.
THE PROBLEM
Modelwise is shaping the future of engineering design automation, with a global presence from Germany to the UK and U.S. To attract world-class talent and offer flexibility, they follow a remote-first approach. They’re partnering with Employer of Record services to support their international growth, and avoid the high costs of setting up entities in every country.
However, their first EOR partner, one of the the biggest EOR providers in the market, couldn’t support the flexibility Modelwise needed. When their Chief of Staff, Lowri, wanted to work remotely from Italy, their provider couldn’t accommodate it - since she was officially employed under their UK entity, cross-border work wasn’t allowed. The team also found the support slow and disconnected, and their systems too complex for a startup moving fast.
“We had the feeling of being passed on a lot with our previous EOR provider. They have a ticketing system which is extremely frustrating. You always get the sense you're talking to three different people, none of whom can really solve your problems. They have a very complicated system regarding the invoices and it was more expensive.”

THE SOLUTION
Modelwise started looking for alternative EOR providers who could offer:
They chose Playroll for its reputation for human service, flexibility, and intuitive tools, ideal for a remote-first team. For Modelwise, switching providers wasn’t just about fixing what wasn’t working - they wanted a long-term partner that could scale with their global hiring ambitions.
“In Italy, they call it smart-working — and it really is. I’m building a career in an exciting, fast-moving company without giving up the chance to explore the world. We wouldn’t have the talented team we do if we’d only hired where we had legal entities. Playroll made my own hiring — and that of others in a range of complex situations — simple and compliant, without the legal headache.”

THE RESULTS
Modelwise required an urgent EOR migration process to support Lowri’s Italian remote worker visa application in time. Playroll successfully completed the migration process in three days, which allowed Lowri to compliantly realise her dream of working remotely for Modelwise in Italy.
Modelwise is now using Playroll to offer EOR services to other new hires as well, including supporting an employee based in Bulgaria – and eliminating the need for a relocation that would’ve greatly impacted his quality of life:
“Today, I’m part of a company developing a world-class solution for engineering teams. It’s challenging, fulfilling work — and thanks to Playroll, I can do it from home without a huge move that would have greatly disrupted my family life.
Playroll makes it easy for companies to employ talent globally by taking care of local regulations, payroll, and compliance. For me, that means I can stay officially employed where I live. Without them, my employer would have needed to set up a local entity, which would have been far too expensive and complicated for a small start-up to employ just one person, however much they wanted to.
The biggest difference? I’m no longer missing out. My toddler is now 1.5 years old, and I get to be here — for the milestones, the mess, and the magic of everyday life," says Ivaylo Konsulov, Software Engineer.
As a bonus, Modelwise saw a great improvement in the level of customer service they experienced.
"I really love the personalized customer service – I have a very open and responsive relationship with the Playroll team. Particularly if you're working at a startup, and might not have formal HR training, the responsive service really helps – and it’s a hallmark of Playroll’s success,” adds Lowri.
Modelwise proves that startups don’t need to choose between global growth and simplicity. With Playroll, they’ve found a way to build an international team - without borders, without compromise.
